The Mariana Pineda European Centre for Women is housed in the last home of Mariana Pineda. Born in 1804, she became a Spanish national heroine because of her support for liberal causes. She helped a liberal cousin to escape from prison. When her house was searched in 1831, a flag with the slogan `Equality, Freedom and Law` was found. She was arrested and because she would not betray her accomplices, she was publicly executed. The building is now an office for the Municipal Council of Women and an exhibition hall is devoted to Mariana de Pineda.
