The Monumento a Don Miguel de Unamuno stands on the slopes of Montana Quemada, a 950 foot high volcanic mountain. The monument is to the writer Miguel de Unamuno, a poet and thinker who was exiled to Fuerteventura Island in 1924 for his outspoken political views. He loved the island`s austere landscape and traditional lifestyle and, after leaving the island, often wrote about Fuerteventura. Made of sandstone in 1970, the monument is seven feet tall and is the work of Juan Borges Lineres.
