During the Spanish Civil War, on the 26 April 1937 and at the request of General Franco, German and Italian planes dropped bombs on Gernika resulting in nearly 1700 deaths. Picasso immortalised the massacre in his famous painting called Guernica which is housed in the Reina Sofia gallery in Madrid. The Museum of Peace explores the concept of peace as well as chronicling the bombing of Gernika. There are also audiovisual presentations and information is available in English.
