The Sanctuario de Loyola is a massive basilica which was built as a monument to St Ignatius of Loyola who died in 1556. Loyola founded the Jesuits in 1534 and this is an important pilgrimage site. The house where Loyola was born in 1491 is now a museum and the basilica has been built around it. The basilica with its huge dome is 200 feet high and is a distinctive feature in its surroundings south of Azpeitia.
