The Santa Catalina Headland is now a park for the enjoyment of all, but in the past it was a Ministry of Defence property used for military manoeuvres. Back in the 17th Century, a fort protected the promontory from foreign invasion. On the headland is a large concrete sculpture called the Eulogy of the Horizon. Placed here in 1990, it was constructed by Basque artist Eduardo Chillida. An echo of the sea can be heard from within the structure, and it is now recognised as a symbol of Gijon.
