The Capilla Real was built as a mausoleum for the Catholic monarchs in the early 16th century. Isabel died first and her body lay in the Convent of San Francisco until the completion of this ornate, Gothic chapel. A magnificent, gilded, wrought iron grille encloses the altar and the marble figures of Fernando, Isabel, the monarch`s daughter Juano la Loca and her husband Felipe El Hermanso. Below in the crypt are their coffins. A museum in the sacristy houses Isabel`s crown, Fernando`s sword and Isabel`s collection of Flemish paintings.
