Gernika sits beside the estuary of the River Oka, a varied area attracting many species of birds. The last six miles of the river`s estuary was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1984. It encompasses several towns and villages, including Gernika and Bermeo. Views of the estuary can be obtained from the roadside and it is a good area for birdwatching as it is on the migratory route between Europe and Africa.
