Zarautz has a beautiful long stretch of sandy beach and it is popular for surfing. A World Surfing Championship round is held here every year. Zarautz is also popular for other water sports, and there are many good restaurants. Now a holiday resort, the town was once a whaling port and it has many well preserved old mansions as well as medieval buildings such as the Luzea Tower.
