The castle at Alcala la Real was built in the mid 8th Century when the town was ruled by the Moors. It was taken by the Christians in 1341. The castle`s keep is still standing and offers extensive views as far as the Sierra Nevada. There is an archaeological exhibition which includes prehistoric, Roman and medieval finds. Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria with its Plateresque decorations.
