One of Spain`s great Gothic masterpieces, Leon Cathedral dates from the mid 13th Century. Built of golden sandstone, it took less than 100 years to complete. The west front has three portals with detailed carvings and a 14th Century rose window. The cathedral has over 100 windows of stained glass and most are from the 13th to the 16th Century. Other features are the magnificent 15th Century choir stalls, a Gothic sculpture of the Virgen Blanca, and the altarpiece with work by Nicolas Frances who painted the Gothic frescoes in the cloister.
