The Gran Canaria Museum is devoted to the early history of Gran Canaria. It houses displays illustrating the culture of the island before the time of the Spanish conquest. Some of the people who inhabited the island in the Middle Ages lived in caves and the museum has a reproduction of the painted Cave of Galdar. They mummified their dead by wrapping them in goatskins and there is a gallery of mummies and skeletons. The museum also contains an interesting collection of ceramics.
