Christopher Columbus is said to have prayed at the ancient Iglesia de la Asuncion before he set off on his voyage to the New World in 1492. Later, the church was attacked by Algerian pirates and most of the present building dates from the 17th Century. It is mainly Gothic with some Baroque features. On one wall is a mural depictng the town`s successful defence against the attack by the English in the 18th Century.
