Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a lovely town with a cathedral built in a mixture of Rommanesque and Gothic styles. The town is named after the 11th Century saint who improved the Road to Santiago de Compostela and built a bridge and hostel for the pilgrims. For many centuries a cockerel and hen have been kept in a cage in the cathedral in memory of a teenager who survived being hanged linked to a roast chicken that became alive.
