The Alcazaba of Loja was built to serve as a military and an adminisrative centre in medieval times. The most splendid period of this place was when it was under the Omeys. It is still possible to see some of the remains, including the keep which dates from the 9th to the 14th centuries. Part of the city walls such as gates and turrets from the 12th to the 14th centuries can be also be seen in the Alcazaba.
