The Church of San Juan in Portomarin is a Romanesque church that was moved to its present site when the Reservoir of Belesar was created in the mid 20th Century. The church was built as a fortress as well as a church when the Hospitallers came to Portomarin in the early 13th Century. It has a defensive tower on each of its four corners and a carved portal whilst inside is a barrel vaulted nave and a semi-circular aspe. The village is on the Pilgrim`s Route to Santiago de Compostela.
