Lugo was founded by the Romans in 14 BC and it was the most important of their cities in Galacia. Built in 260 AD, the walls enclosing Lugo are still standing. They cover more than 2 kilometres, have ten gates and are between eight and twelve metres wide. The walls are the best preserved in Spain, and in the year 2000 became a World Heritage Site. There are modern accesses to the wall and it is possible to walk around them. One convenient place to do this is at the Santiago Gate, which is near the cathedral.
