The Monasterio de San Juan de la Pena is built under a rock where there was once an earlier hermitage. It became an important centre on the pilgrimage route to Santiago. There are two floors with a church, dormitory and wall paintings on the lower floor and a Romanesque pantheon upstairs. After a fire in the 17th century another monastery was built in the Baroque style higher up the hill.
