On the site of the Hermitage of Santa Elena there was a Roman necropolis which was founded in the same period as the Roman town of Oiasso. Archaeological excavations have discovered remains that suggest there has been a sacred site here for over a thousand years. The present 14th Century building was built on the foundations of a 10th Century church. The hermitage is now a museum with exhibits found on this and other archaeological sites.
