The Acclimatization Garden of La Orotava contains an extraordinary number of different plants in its six acres. The majority are not native to Tenerife. The botanic garden was created in the late 18th Century by King Carlos 111 to find out if plants from the tropical colonies could survive in Spain. Some did but most perished when taken to mainland Spain. Amongst the plants that visitors can see are breadfruit trees, cinnamon trees, coffee bushes and orchids.
