The Alcazaba dates from the 8th Century when it was built on Roman foundations. A Roman theatre at its foot was discovered in 1951. Higher up the hill, the palace was built in the 11th Century and had two rings of defensive walls and several towers. It was the home of the Moorish rulers who, for a time, controlled Granada, Jaen and Carmona. The palace has been restored but there are remains of Moorish walls and Moorish gardens.
