The Alcazaba is a large Muslim fort that was built by the Moors in the 9th Century on a site that had been previously occupied by the Visigoths and the Romans. Its purpose was to defend the bridge built by the Romans across the River Guadiana. Inside the walls is a Moorish cistern which has been dug to the depth of the nearby riverbed. From the battlements are great views over the River Guadiana and its islets.
