The Basilica de San Francisco el Grande occupies the site of a former Franciscan convent said to have been founded by Francis of Assisi in the early 13th Century. It was replaced in the mid 18th Century by this huge basilica. After being used as a barracks in the 19th Century, it was renovated. The church has a huge dome, twin towers, and doors carved by Juan Guas. There are many fine paintings, including one by Goya.
