The Church of Santa Maria la Mayor was built in the fishermen`s quarter by the Guild of Fishermen in the 16th Century. It became a basilica in 1962. This delightful church has a magnificent Plateresque facade in the style of an altarpiece. There are scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and above are carved figures of oarsmen and fishermen hauling in their nets. Inside, the basiica is a mixture of styles. The high altar was carved from chestnut and walnut wood.
