This quiet park offers fine views of the Palacio Real. The name is derived from the occasion in 1109 when a Moorish army set up camp here in an unsuccessful attempt to recapture Madrid. During the mid 19th Century, it was landscaped with woodlands, grassy areas, paths, statues and fountains. In 1931 it was opened to the public, but was closed shortly afterwards by Franco. It was not reopened to the public until 1983.
