Dating from the early 16th Century, the Capilla del Obispo is the finest Renaissance chapel in Madrid. It was built in the 1540s for the Don Francisco de Vargas family. Don Francisco was councillor to the royal family. Inside are the family tombs, plateresque carvings and a gilded high altar by Francisco Giralte, a student of Alonso Berruguete. The chapel`s vaulting is Gothic. Although many buildings nearby were burnt down during the Civil War, the chapel escaped damage.
