To the east of the beaches of Playa Blanca, Castillo de las Coloradas stands on the headland of Punta del Aquila. The watchtower was built in the mid 18th Century and its bell was sounded to warn that pirates were approaching the coast. The tower also provided refuge. From the headland are beautiful views of the coast and a short walk leads to the beach of Playa Mujeres.
