Conventico Caves

The Conventico Caves are located in the old part of the city which is known as the First Fortified Area of Melilla. They are natural caves and it is thought that long ago they were inhabited by Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs and also Spaniards. They were used in the 18th Century to store religious images during the Siege of Melilla. Work has been done to preserve the caves and they can be visited.
