The Parroquia Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion is the oldest conserved monument in Motril. Originally, it was built as a fortress and a place of refuge for the local people when the town was being attacked. It was built in the early 16th Century on the site of a mosque by Alonso Marquez of Granada. During the Civil War it was used as a military fortress and part of the church was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion. Since then it has been rebuilt and has features in a mixture of styles.
