The English Cemetery is a peaceful spot that dates from the time when non-Catholics who died in Spain had no proper burial place as they were considered infidels. The cemetery was founded in 1830 by William Mark, the British Consul General. Many inscriptions on the stones go back over one hundred years and some of the graves are covered in shells. The inscriptions are in English. The writer Gerald Brenan is buried here, although he had donated his body to medical science.
