Porto Colom was originally a fishing village and the port for nearby Felantix. It is named after Christopher Columbus and it is thought he may have been born here. At one time the port was very busy, exporting wine to France. It is now popular with Spanish visitors and it is an attractive resort with pastel coloured houses near the waterfront. There are headlands at the entrance to the bay and a sandy beach at Cala Marcil, about one mile south of the harbour.
