Moguer is the birthplace of the poet laureate Juan Ramon Jimenez. Born in 1881, he won the Nobel prize for literature in 1956. On some of the streets around the town are plaques with extracts from Platero y Yo (Platero and I) which details his childhood in Moguer with his donkey. His birthplace is now a museum and the house has been restored to what it was like when he lived there. It contains many items from his childhood.
