Corralas are tenements that were built in the 19th Century in the poorer areas of Madrid and, in most cases, the balconies of the buildings faced an inner courtyard. This La Corrala was not completed and faces a plaza. It was declared a National Monument of Historic Interest in 1977 and restoration work has been carried out. During the summer months, light opera is often performed in the square.
