Lord James of Douglas died in Teba in 1330 during a battle between the Christians and the Moors. At the time that he died Lord James was carrying a casket containing the heart of Robert the Bruce. He had intended to take it to the Holy Land but then thought it was his duty to fight the Moors in Spain. The heart was taken to Melrose Abbey where it was buried. A monument of Scottish granite in the centre of Teba is a reminder of the event.
