The Monasterio de Santa Clara is the most splendid building in Moguer. Founded in the 14th Century, it has Mudejar cloisters and Renaissance rooms. Inside the Gothic Mudejar church are the marble tombs of the Portocarrero family. The Mudejar choir stalls from the 15th Century are in the Nasrid-Granadine style. There is a plaque commemorating the fact that Christopher Columbus spent one whole night praying in the church on his return from his first voyage to America. This was to fulfil a promise made to the Virgin during a storm.
