The Reina Sofia Museum is housed in a former hospital that closed in 1965. One of the main attractions of this museum of modern art is Picasso`s Guernica, a work commissioned and painted in 1937 for a Paris exhibition as a protest of the Civil War in Spain. Painted in black, white and grey, it symbolises the suffering and brutality of war. Many other artists are represented, including Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Juan Gris. Works by the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida are on display.
