The National Museum of Roman Art is housed in a splendid red brick building designed by architect Rafael Moneo Valles to display the town`s Roman archaeology. It was built on an excavated site and in the basement is a Roman street and the remains of villas and tombs. Off the main hall are statues from the nearby Roman theatre, including the head of Augustus and pieces from Merida`s forum. Exhibits in the galleries include beautiful mosaics, ceramics, pottery, jewellery and coins.
