Melilla has several fortified areas which date from the 14th Century as well as many buildings in the Modernist and Art Deco styles. The citadel has four areas which were separated by walls and moats. Three of them were built to project into the sea. Visitors can explore by taking an interesting walk to discover the moats, towers and walls as well as other buildings. Old Melilla is now a declared Historical and Artistic Monument.
