The Royal Palace stands on the site of Alcazar, the former fortress that burnt down in 1734. Felipe V commissioned a huge replacement which wasn`t ready to be occupied until 1764, in the reign of Carlos 111. This splendid building is no longer the home of the royal family, but it is used for state occasions and can be visited. Highlights include the dining room with its chandeliers, tapestries and gold plated decorations, the porcelain room, the throne room and the king`s private chambers.
