Palamos was founded in the 13th Century and important naval expeditions sailed from here. Despite its strong fortifications, the town was sacked in 1543 by Turkish pirates. During the 19th century, Palamos exported much of Catalonia`s cork. The town still has a fishing fleet and fish auctions take place regularly in the harbour. There is also a leisure boat marina. Above the port stands the Gothic Church of Santa Maria.
