The Panteon de Hombres Ilustres is a splendid 19th Century building which was built to serve as a final resting place for the most important figures in Madrid`s history. Because of political upheavals, the plans have not been completely realized. The partly built pantheon has a Gothic cloister with metal domes and contains elaborate tombs of 19th Century politicians. These were sculpted by leading artists such as Benlliure.
