Peniscola Castle was built by the Knights Templar in the 13th Century on the foundations of a Moorish fortress. It later became the home of the pretender Pedro de Luna who was elected Pope Benedict X111 during the schism that split the Catholic Church in the late 14th Century. Around the castle`s courtyard are towers, a hall and church. From the walls are great views of the town, coast and mountains.
