The fountain in the middle of the Plaza de Cibeles is one of the most beautiful in Madrid. It was designed in the late 18th Century by Ventura Rodriguez and Jose Hermosilla. The sculpture is of the goddess Cybele riding on a chariot drawn by two lions. It is one of the city`s symbols. Around the square are a number of important buildings, including the Palacio de Communications and the army headquarters, the Cuartel General del Ejercito de Tierra.
