Some of Madrid`s most famous, historic buildings are around the Plaza de la Villa, including the 15th Century Lujan Tower. Francois 1 of France is said to have been a prisoner here after he was defeated at the Battle of Pavia in 1525. The town hall was built in 1617 by Juan Gomez de Mora, architect of the Plaza Mayor. Linked to this building by an arch is the 16th Century Casa de Cisneros, named after Cardinal Cisneros who founded the University of Alcala.
