The popular meeting place Plaza de Santa Ana takes its name from the 16th Century Convent of Santa Ana that once stood here. It was demolished in the 19th Century during the reign of Joseph Bonaparte. One of the statues in the square is of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, and there is an older marble staue of the 17th Century playwright Pedro Calderon de la Borca. In the square is the 18th Century Teatro Espanol, one of the oldest theatres in Madrid. It was restored in 1980 after a fire.
