Portal is known for its artists` colony where Mallorcan potters use the rich, local soil to make earthenware cooking pots and bowls. Visitors can look around the workshops where glazed plates and bowls with symbols (some going back to Moorish times)are on sale. Clay whistles called siutell are made by some of the potters. A market is held on Thursdays and an annual pottery fair is held in the nearby town of Marratxi.
