The Alcala Arch was built during the reign of Carlos 111 and it took nine years to complete. At that time it marked the city`s eastern boundary. Designed by Francesco Sabatini in the neoclassical style, the granite structure has three central arches divided by Ionic pilasters, and rectangular openings at the sides for pedestrians. The upper part is decorated with figures in white stone. It is best seen at night, when floodlit.
