This popular square is on the site of the original eastern gate to Madrid. Many historical events have taken place here, including the revolt in 1808 against the French. In the centre is a statue of Carlos 111, whilst in the corner of Calle del Carmen is the bronze statue of a bear and a strawberry tree, an emblem of Madrid. The Casa de Correos, once a post office, now houses Madrid`s regional government. A symbol in the square marks kilometre zero, starting point of Spain`s road network.
