The Real Academia de Bellas Artes is housed in a building designed by Churriguera in the 18th Century. Founded by Fernando V1, the fine arts academy exhibits a superb collection of paintings, especially those of Spanish artists between the 16th and 19th centuries. Exhibited are paintings by El Greco, Velazquez, Rubens, Murillo, Ribero and Zurburan. A room is devoted to the works of Goya, including a self portrait, the haunting Madhouse and the Burial of the Sardine.
