Merida`s Roman Theatre is exceptionally well preserved and it is still used for the city`s summmer festval in July and August. It was built about 20BC by Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus 1, in the style of the theatres of Rome. The semi-circle of stone tiers had seating for 6,000 spectators, and there was a pit for an orchestra. The stage has an elegant colonnade. The ampitheatre and Roman Museum are nearby.
