The Royal Academy of History is a brick building that was built in 1788 by Juan de Villanueva. Marcelino Mendendez Pelayo, an important intellectual figure, became director in 1898 and lived here until 1912. In the library are many thousands of books and important documents. There is a museum housing a number of the antiques, artworks and objects from the academy.
